Late Saturday morning. Marsh Lane, Bootle. He was feeling flush...three nicker and a couple of half crowns in his pocket.
First, over to the local shop...Nelly Dunne's. His Mam wanted a sliced loaf,a quarter of Mantunna tea, 12 oxos and a box of Almond slices. With a bit of luck, she might even pay him for them "When her ship came in"
He got himself 20 No.6, a box of matches and the Daily Mirror.
Next, he went into the betting shop, and put on a 2/9 yank.
Took his Mam's shopping home, then went back out to the Alex pub.
Two pints of bitter, smoked a couple of ciggies, read the paper.
Time to go to the match. Got the 81 bus from the Strand, got off at Utting Avenue, walked up to the Cathedral of Football.
Playing Chelsea today...walking up, he got a six of chips in a chippy.
Good job it was a big six...at least half of the lads walking along said"Giz a chip la!" The vinegar was drawing them like flies.
Got a programme, paid five bob to get in the Kop.
We won...4 - 1 . Lawler, St.John 2 and Geoff Strong.
Walked back home, to save the bus fare. Had a couple more pints in "The Jolly's"
He was taking his bird out to the flicks that night.
She was more interested in Paul Newman and Robert Redford, up on the screen...raindrops falling on their heads...and her Strawberry Mivvi...plus big tub of popcorn, than she was in him...
Good job she lived local...could walk her home. Via a chippy, of course. Fish and chips for him, steak pie done in the fat for her...with chips. That girl couldn't half eat...
Got a kiss and a cuddle goodnight....her Ma came out in her curlers and hair net and scared him away.
Like a Bootle version of Ena Sharples....
He was made up, had a cracking day, the Reds had won,again...and he had a good few bob coming back on that Yankee bet, which he would pick up on Monday.
Just as well, because he only had those two half crowns left in his pocket.
Cost of living was getting worse, back then, in 1969.
This story is true...if you care to believe it.
