BOOTLE HISTORY SPAM EMAILS

Postby smoked out » Mon Nov 20, 2017 2:56 pm

Receiving emails from BOOTLE HISTORY ,the list of people copied in to receive the same always includes other members from this site , has the site been hacked and members email addresses passed on , I have had a few with each containing a link to one thing or another offering services , this is alongside the now huge number of emails from mailing lists from everything from Everest windows to health insurance , its a pain deleteing or blocking the senders.

I've wondered the same thing Alex. Seem to get even more junk mail after logging on to BT. Literally dozens if not hundreds each day, although not sure they're all connected to this site. Some even getting past Hotmail filters now.
On one occasion it was more than just a nuisance. Earlier this year we were waiting for our flight tickets to come through by email. Got to just a few days before our holiday with no sign so I rang the company to find they'd been sent weeks earlier. Presumably they'd been filtered as junk and joined dozens of others I'd not had time to check first. We ended up having to go to a local agent to have new ones printed off

Seems a problem we all share.

Blocking or unsubscribing simply lets them know you received the message so doesn't help and is soon repeated as a result. I don't believe it is simply related to this site but Mack will advise on that..

I am inclined to check junk several times a day to see if there is anything relevant before deleting unopened rubbish, usually eight or nine at a time. Inconvenient but effective.

I have sought expert advice on this problem and the only other way is to change your email address but even with a new address they will soon be back.

Your email address can be also circulated if you leave it with any of the stores when you buy something so I also avoid that or simply make one up..

Hiya,

Spam is unfortunately one of those things that will never go away. Just to let you know as well as the admin email address for our Bootle forum I also have Gmail account which I use for the main site and I'm definitely not getting any spam messages here related to our Bootle site.
If you have clicked any of links in the spam messages you are receiving including 'unsubscribe me' etc you are letting them know your email account is active and then this is when the problem starts. Best thing to do is just mark them as 'spam' and do not open them. Next time you open your email client it will remember not to display them and send them straight into your spam folder.

Mack just to clarify; I've never had mail that relates directly to Bootle History. My query was related to the fact that I seem to get less junk mail when I haven't logged on to the Bootle site which is why Alex's post rang a bell.
My problem is with the huge amount of spam and junk mail I get,. I don't open them so certainly don't click on anything in them but the problem is that with so very many appearing in the Junk mail box I rarely have time to check them all and tend to just deleting the lot without checking....... unfortunately Hotmail junk filter is a bit overenthusiastic and I've occasionally lost important messages. :(

Hiya,

It's nothing to do with the 'site is insecure' message.

The site is actually secure it's just that to get the green padlock displaying in the browser (you have probably seen it on banking / shopping sites etc) I would need to pay an extra £75 a year on top of what I'm already paying for the web hosting and domain name.

It's Google who have been pushing this and it's affecting a lot of small community sites.

Hi Smoked,

I've no idea why you are getting those messages with the heading 'Bootle History' with a link back to our site. I checked the first name 'Tony Dower' as a test in your screenshot and they are not a registered member.

As a precaution I've changed all passwords for anything related to 'Bootle History' this includes all email addresses associated with the site.

Let me know if it continues, I'm curious.

Bernie, there's no back up plan unfortunately. If I kick the bucket or just decide to stop paying the bills the site goes down forever... I'm a one man band here running things doing my best to keep things online and running with new content.

Hi all if people would use the Bcc(blind carbon copy) most of these problems would not arise.
I have' within the last couple of days, received emails from members of this forum that included all their
contacts ,one I counted had 45 email addresses for anyone to pick up and send spam to.
PLEASE stop email harvesting use the Bcc feature on your emails and stop these harvesting bots.

Hey Mack, I remember years ago some of us gave donations for you to keep the site going.
Can we do that again,? It;s not only the money side of it, it is also your time.

I will gladly send my Forum contribution to you Matt and Sheila, as long as you include me on the cruise, however my contribution to Mack will have a serious shortfall in comparison to the cost of my Cruise ticket!!!
