Waler Horses from Australia

Postby philrob » Tue Sep 05, 2017 3:22 pm

According to the Australian Press there is a show on tonight on BBC4 at 9.00pm which tells the story of the Waler Horses.
These incredible horses were ridden by the Australian Light Horse, particularly of note during the Charge at Beersheba, Israel on October 31 1917.

I saw the documentary a few weeks back and it is superb.
Of all the horses that travelled to the Middle East during the first War, only one returned. The soldiers were forced to shoot the horses because of the cost of bringing them home. This was in preference to having the eaten or punished by the locals.

I will be in Israel in October for the re-enactment of the charge - I am excited about seeing the celebrations on October 31, at which my band is playing.

Hi Phil,my second cousin Naomi and her husband Ori study at Ben-Gurion University in Beersheba
but at the moment they are both at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and her mother
Dina and father Alon have a farm(table grapes) just down the road from there. They are the only members of my family that do
not live on Kibbutz Ma'agan Michael outside of Haifa.
Have you ever seen the movie "The Light Horsemen?

Phil - Very interesting, I have never heard of a Whaler Horse;
however, after doing a short search came up with this lovely
photo of one. Wish I could have seen the program. :(

Very informative Programme - Lots of photos and film footage I'd never seen on a period and theatre of war I've been interested in for 50 years.

Never heard of Olden and The Light Horse being in Damascus being in the City before Lawrence before last night, but saw the evidence with my own eyes in the programme.

Will bring that up at the next Bi-Symposium meeting of our TEL Society at St. Johns Oxford in Sep 2018

130,000 Waler Horses and not one returned home.

Quite shameful for us Humans really.

Sorry not to get the show here in Aus I love the Walers and it was a terrible thing for the Light Horsemen to have to destroy their beloved horses. Sadly only one came home and that was the horse of an officer of high rank. My friend Francis uncle was at the charge and lived to return to Australia. Thanks Phil

Excellent documentary, Phil, hadn't heard of the breed before, beautiful strong horse!
How pitiful to see them finish up in such a state, how must their riders have felt, returning home without their faithful companion
Shed more than a tear, seeing horses being skinned and remains strewn along the waters edge  as if this form of life didn't matter :(

Thanks for showing, Phil!
