The church on Merton Road opened in the September of 1957.
At that time they said it was the first church in England to have a purpose built sound proofed area at the rear of the church for worshipers with babies/small children.
The old church on Derby Road was regularly set on fire after it was deconsecrated. JJC.

My mum and I used to live next door to the bomb site where it was built with my lovely granny Wethered
(66 Merton Road) until my dad came home for good in1948 then we got our prefab in the South Park.

Matt - Your comment certainly jogged my memory, Dr. Wethered was our
Family Doctor. Remember him coming to the house to treat my youngest
bro, Keith, (who was 13 years old) who, after recovering from mumps,
developed orchitis. Dr. Wethered told my Mum that he would only ever have
children of one sex. (Some people have scoffed at this, but my brother has
two boys!) Also meant to add, that Lew had the same thing and of course
we had three girls!!!
