Churches today, not as popular as in the past..once open all day, now closed to the public....locked and bolted, due to reasons of security!!
Stained glass church windows, once visible to the world...now mostly caged or covered by Perspex.... vandalism a very costly business!!
Commercialism - Sunday opening...also plays a large part in decreasing numbers of attendances...shopping precincts being the more attractive option!!
Plus - bad publicity - scandals - court cases - must be costing churches and religious groups millions!!
Times and people have changed..most churches trying to adapt in order to keep with political trends..doesn't seem to be working though, worshipers turning away in their droves for whatever reason!!!
Tommy, you could have a point regarding funeral costs..average costing over three thousand for a one car job (according to item on the radio) some will have to skimp and scrape to find such a large amount..and if it means cutting out the frills, such as a church service, suppose they have no option!!
Most worshipers these day's tend to be of the older generation, or family's with young children...all helping to make the numbers up!
Disheartening for clergy..preaching to empty pews!!
Will the days of filled churches ever return
know of five churches in my area, three still very much in use for occasions such as Christening's, Weddings, Funerals, Easter and Christmas, one church closed and almost derelict, the other turned into flats!!
