...so, anyone know what the Molly Maguires were?

I know there was a movie of that name with Sean Connery and, I think, Richard Harris, but I've not seen it.

I've never heard of them but Janette reckons it's a kind of Irish Masonic secret society in working class circles. It was mentioned in one of them Maeve Binchy or Lyn Andrews books she reads about Liverpool/ Ireland. K

Phil, Mollies, around a bit earlier than that, mid nineteenth century, time of the new English landlords being established in Ireland, Catholics starting to form into little groups, one of the groups being the Molly Maguires.
Following Irish potato famine, 1845 - 52 many Irish fled to different parts of the world, some ending up as coal miners in Pennsylvania, this is where the Molly Maguires were at their most fearsome..nobody would mess with these men, violence was not uncommon with the Mollies, but eventually most of the leaders were executed!
By the turn of the century, Molly Maguires had died out and replaced by all sorts of new groups!
Following song about the sons of Molly Maguire..Molly was a real person, thrown out of her home by the new English landlords!

Go for it Ken or should I say Janette. :)
Very big in Liverpool but as Shelagh said the secret society
really took off in the USA and especially Pennsylvania.
Guess Sheila reads the same books as Janette Ken because it was Sheila
who put me up to asking that question.
