Ha! just looked in to see if any progress had been made, read the clues again and it occurred to me that instead of pulling SIR backwards I should have been reversing DRAG also!!!
#1 BORIS GARDINER ....drag sir(knight) backwards is risgard + IN with BOER war outside is BORISGARDINER

Can see where Bern's coming from with Donovan (nod backwards) which made me think of Bert WEE DON which I know is wrong but just can't get out of my head now

Time to brainstorm perhaps'
3. Can only come up with SPAN or names of famous bridges; SYDNEY, LONDON, TOWER, CLIFTON, FORTH
only group presenting from that lot was Steeleye Span or Spandeau Ballet neither of which fit the rest of the clue....
SMEAR ALL FILM I can only suggest is an anagram

9. NOD OFF.... DON, DOZE, NAP, ZZZ
in the CHASSIS ...... BODY, SHELL
whatever that leads to could be the surname as it's
AFTER
what sounds like A LITTLE WAIT....... ERR, PAUSE, PAWS, PORES, GRAM (weight)

any other suggestions folk??

Bee, I'll give you one of them, even though you say it doesn't fit the clue.

Get bridge = span. Then smear = daub. + all. Film = ET. =. Span...daub...all..et. = Spandau Ballet

You have spelled Spandau as Spandeau

Bill.

Bee, with 9. You have most of the relevant words.
He was really a one hit wonder, so with that clue maybe 'this time' you will get the answer.

Ner ner na ner ner :P

Pipped you to the post there Bee - like yourself all thanks to Google.

'This Time' didn't work for me so I searched one hit wonders of the 60s in the end.

Another great set of teasers Bill - all very much appreciated.

Had to so something similar myself Bern. Just glad to see the back of those last two and relieved I don't have to sit down and work out an anagram of "smear all film" which I have to say Bill was probably one of your most horrid clues
But joking aside, thanks Bill you do a great job giving me(and I'm sure everyone else) something to worry away at whilst we get on with our chores.
