I've looked at that stone plaque many times. It consists of a crown and I think the date is 1901. I think it's nothing more than a nice bit of decorative architecture, commemorating the date the house was built. It was plain sandstone, until someone decided to paint it white a few years ago, which I think is a shame.

There are stone images of Queen Victoria on the side of houses at the junction of Sidney/Gonville and Cambridge Roads, again with the date the houses were constructed. I don't think many people know these images are there, as you have to really look up to see them.

A lot of buildings in Bootle are like that, you have to look up see see the interesting architecture/stonework.

Hi Bernie,

I remember that horn very well, used to live at 39 Croxteth Road when I was a kid back in the 60's and 70's and it used to go off at 8am too. I remember seeing in another thread about a Mr Brimage who lived in the street, he was my next door neighbour along with his wife.

Small world.

I am positive that that house is 295 Knowsley Road. I was able to find the following on the tinternet:

A family called Gillies lived there, around 1911.

I was nearly right then. Got the crown right but not the date, doh. It would be interesting to found out the origins of the stone plaque. Who was A P.

Most houses only had these if the owners were prominent citizens. The Large house on Merton Road now known as abegale lodge nursing home, has some entwined letters over the doorway, and carved into the newell post at the foot of the stairs. The only other house with a turret like structure (that I know of anyway) is on the corner of Fernhill and Oxford Roads, and years ago thoses houses were owned by Bootle's own well to do.

So it would be interesting to know who this house was built for and what they did for a living.

Anyone remember this dairy

Postby Graham@educato » Sat Aug 27, 2011 10:05 am

I remember the dairy very well, my Auntie and Uncle lived in the next street, Rosalind Street. the door has now been bricked in and there was a window to the right of it which has also been bricked in. There was quite a big step up to get in and it had a big brown counter as I recall. It was definitely there throughout the 50s, after that I don't know.

They talk about a small world....I live in North Devon now. Until about 5 years ago there was a restaurant on the outskirts of Barnstaple called Lynwood House. The owner and chef there was called Ruth Roberts (her married name). Talking to her one night I discovered that her family actually owned and ran that dairy!
