I have no idea what type of bird this is but we were visiting the beautiful "Brookgreen Gardens" in Myrtle Beach South Carolina
a couple of years ago and the birds just sat there and looked at you, not scared at all.

patricia, you birdie is a cattle egret.common on all continents and you were right bernie they are quite solitary birds once the breeding season is over.
bernie your bird is an example of the work carried out by the WILDFOWL AND WETLANDS TRUST.they work worlwide to preserve all sorts of wildlife i have seen some herons with rings on on my travels.graham.

Hi Graham and Patricia, think you will find that Patricia's photo is of a snowy egret.Cattle egrets do not have black bills or
long black legs with yellow feet but the snowy does have a yellow patch at the beginning of the beak.

I've not got a photo, but on a country lane in 10cm snow a white van overtook me when we were all doing about 20. He must have felt really clever. 1/2 hr later we caught up with him , just behind him, in a queue. !!!
