Hi Larry
The stables in Thornton Road belonged to the Cranmer Cartage Company, I was also a pal of Arthur Taylor and like yourself played in the yard at night. They had lofts at the back of Parrs yard, backing on to Thornton Road so possibly they were originally for keeping hay and maybe stabled horses below. Arthur was a classmate of mine at school we continued to socialise after we left, his dad was also the treasurer over the road, at the Stanley Social Club. You must have known the gang we socialised with, Les Davies, Tucker Walker, Ron Olsen, Tyrell Bros, John Somers. Jimmy Pring. When Arthur's dad left Parrs, he was the yard manager incidentally, they moved to Netherton. Arthur went to work in USA returning to avoid the draft. He then emigrated to Canada late 60s, I last saw him in 1969.

hi larry, dave has explained the stables belonging to parrs.
i used to play a lot in the cranmer yard, i cannot remember the sons name now. he also went to linacre school. and the man that cleaned out, used to wear one of those old macs, and when we were there, he would pull out from his top pocket a tablespoon, then stick it into the barrel of molasses,
and say " here yer argh sun, get this down yer. it!s good for yer.
he never believed, i already used to take it at home.i always enjoyed my time around there.

That would be the younger brother Robert, you remembered. He played football for the Stanley Social. He was an opthalmic technician, everybody went to him to get glasses cheap, he did them as foreigners. Bob I had forgotten the sister! Les Davies spent hours after school in the stables, he would stay overnight before Bootle Carnival, getting the horses ready and dressed overall for the competition judging.

Nearly correct eldest Edwin (Shed) the twins Steve and Ronnie who passed away about 10 years back, the youngest Les he did start in the Carolina but left and served his time as a fitter at BR Bankhall. He got badly scalded by a steam engine in his first year.

A recap on the house next to the yard had a Memory Lane chat with Ron Olsen today. Before the O'Haras the house was occupied by the Garner family, Steven Garner was the boy you will have remembered. He was known by an uncomplimentary now non-PC prefix to his name.
Also informed the yard previous to Cranmer was Scotts and used for wood storage!
Larry
Ron asks are you connected with Nolans the gents Hairdresser?
