Anyone remember the big old mansion down Balliol road where we used to have to visit the dentist in the 1940s?? I hated going and even the thought of the place now just fills me with dread
The waiting room was down stairs - a white- tiled room (maybe used to be the old kitchen?) and there were long benches us kids had to sit on while we waited for our turn. The bell/buzzer went and the next victim got up and then we all moved along, slowly, one place at a time towards the door. Then your turn came and you had to climb up this huge grand staircase where the nurse was waiting at the top to escort you into the "torture chamber" The dentist stuck a thing-a-me-jig into your mouth to keep it open then covered your face with this awful rubber mask and you were told to count to 10 (I never got there) while the gas was turned on. After a nasty dream/nightmare you'd wake up, given a large gauze pad to hold over your mouth and made your way either back to school or home (depending on how bad you felt!)
OK, so things have changed now, the surroundings are more welcoming, instead of being gassed your get a needle but I still dread going to the dentist - I wonder why :o

Me too Betty...but not in Balliol Road. I went to the clinic near North Park (I think)...new mothers used to go there to get bottles of orange juice and powdered milk. I truly hated that dentist...It took me til I was 28 years and doing midwifery in Portsmouth to not be afraid of the dentist. I found a dentist in Portsmouth and he had a dreadful hand and head shake..it was awful. I sat in the chair near prostrate with fear watching this man trying to get a needle onto a syringe...he was looking at it sideways and just trembling!! Why I didn't walk out I don't know. but that dear man injected me and filled a tooth, checked the rest and I didn't feel a thing. I have never had a fear of dentist since...would rather go to dentist than a doctor anyday....LOL sheila.g

At some stage that dentist's surgery, AKA chamber of horrors, in Balliol Road closed and I went to the one you mentioned at North Park - better environment but I still didn't like it though

I used to get to near fainting stage going through the doors. One time I had the nib of one of those wooden pens go in my eye..and one of the "Big' girls ..she was probably 10...had to take me to the clinic, I got the same feeling then...I just hated the place...sheila.g
