No, not a lolly - as has been said, a cushion-shaped lump of fizzy candy which you could cut your tongue on. It was popular because you seemed to get a lot for your penny, it fizzed, tasted good and lasted a long time. It was a sort of solid sherbet.henry wrote:so was it a lollypop and i still never heard of that word

You can still get sticky lice online Ken. Google "Licquorice Root". Our only source was Hilton's on the corner of Falkner St; the last sweet shop before Gray St School.
Who remembers Coconut Japs (aka Dessert Japs). Shiny colourful half inch sized cubes, a hard shell encasing coconut filling. We've been on the look out for them for years. Found them on line 10 years ago but they were and still are out of stock

I remember Jap Desserts. Also, a mixture called (I think) 'Ducks, Green Peas & Potatoes'. The ducks were a jelly/ wine gum type thing while the peas and spuds were a sort of Dolly Mixture sweet. Quite a treat and only bought by dad. I've also just remembered about something I've not thought of for many years - the penny machines which used to dispense Beech Nut chewing gum. Every fourth penny, you'd get two packets. You never knew when you'd get lucky.

Ian, if my memory serves me correctly there was an arrow on the dial that indicated when an extra pack of gum would be dispensed. JJC.

As a kid, we would sometimes wait for an hour outside Downings on Hawthorne Road (near Waterworks St) for the arrow on the side knob to face us, when the next coin would return 2 packets of chewy. We were poor but found time between visits to the Derby park and street footy! Walshy.

Pigs feet and tripe in our house. I remember.
My Mother cleaned Cooksons and used to give the piggery lads the slops. On slaughter days the lads always gave Mum some " bits " Not sure what they were sometimes but late Friday night fry ups were something to behold after a few pints.
