An Uncle of mine lived in Park Street, their name was Blackburn.
I remember visiting as a kid, it was a tiny place, nothing else, sorry.

I lived in Garden Lane, just off Park Street, from 1955 to 1965 and went to St Monicas infant and junior schools. I remember playing where Park Street and Garden Lane met. I remember there were prefabs with big gardens (well they looked big to me, because we only had a back yard). There was also a debris behind the prefabs where wild flowers grew and I used to pick bunches for my mum to put into jam jars. That debris still had loads of bricks from the bombings and I loved to build houses out of them. We had an outside toilet, no bathroom and no hot water. The bombings had wrecked the sewers and drains and rats often came up into the yards and the street. It sounds like a deprived childhood, but to me it was magic.
Lived in Garden Lane Bootle then moved to Netherton, where my mum still lives.

Hi Billy, I was also born during an air raid, on Earl Road across from the park..
I remember seeing Montgomery passing our house on Park Street on the tank. I delivered newspapers for the newsagent on Hawthorn Rd near Park Street about 1954/55 but I cant remember the name of the place. Good memories,
Peter

Hi Liz,
I lived in one of those prefabs and spent a lot of time playing in the debris behind. I knew some people living on Garden Lane, one was Norman Agnew other was Tommy Galvin or Gavin? There was another debris on Park Street up closer to Stanley Road where we used to build "hidouts" . I left Park Street for Canada in 1957.

Thanks Bob, that's an interesting photo showing the prefabs. Any idea what year it was taken? I left the prefab in 1957.

Peter C mentions Monty visiting in 1946. Do we have any info on this.? My Dad was with him in North Africa and was a Tank Commander from that barracks.

Yes, 1950 would be about right. He rode the tank right past our house (prefab #21). I was quite impressed as a young lad of nine years old.

Thank you Bob. Only name I recognize is Tom Smith. Tom jr. was a very good friend but unfortunately we lost contact after I left for Canada in 1957.
I don't think Pawson's was the name of the news agent but I'm not sure. It was a few shops down from Park Street , between Park Street and the bakery shop.

Hi All .There were a couple of newsagents along there but the first one down from the corner of Park Street was I think Woodwards. My Mum used to clean for Mrs Woodwards for a while .Was the other one Coltmans ?or something similar .We used to look in Coltmans window and Baggie all the toys for Christmas .We. bought sticky lice and pop there on the way back from school .I think Pawsons was a dairy back then .I'm glad you remember seeing Montgomery ,because I saw him in Park Street too .And I'd begun to think I'd imagined it after all these years .Thanks for the memories

Thanks Bob .I think my Mum worked for Woodwards in about 1954 so that would fit in .You have brought back so many memories with that simple post .That little stretch of shops was the centre of our community . Unless we went down Strand Road .Big treat Saturday afternoon .

Thanks Bob. That certainly does bring back memories from the 40's & 50's.
I remember two names. Nolan on Pine Grove had a shop at the corner of Brookfield, I think. Their son Lawrence went to St. Monica's school with me.
Le Serf was a sawdust contractor and his son Peter also went to St Monica's.

As a young boy I worked as a delivery boy for the Chandler on Litherland Rd near Langdale Street, next door to Sid's Green Grocer.
I also worked for the butcher on Stanley Rd neat Bedford Rd.in the good old days (1952 -57).

Thanks for posting this Bob. Never mind Marsh Lane it's like a trip down memory lane. I lived off the Lane from 1971 to 1974.
So many familiar names, including Billy Boardman's dad at number 96 and Margaret Willee's family at 274. Is that your family at 259 June? I remember Linda saying that her brother had lived at that end.

Just a thought that info in Kelly's and Gore's could be misleading for genealogists. That's the 1968 edition which shows WM. J WHITTER at number 92. He was my ex husband's granddad and I know that he died in 1957. As far as I recall his son Fred and family were living in that house in 1968. I wonder if the publishers just reprinted previous entries unless advised otherwise?

Hi Bee, hope you are well. Yes we lived at the top of Marsh Lane number 259 and my auntie Maureen and Uncle Henry Rimmer (Linda's sister) lived at the bottom in number 62. Someone asked me the other day the name of the dentist who lived next door but one to us and I could not remember the name, the list jogged my memory it was Kearon.
