Most of the Class pictures where given to a local historian according to the New School i think i know who but hes not to good a Moment also attended the jimmies infants 1965 to 1970

I was back in Bootle in September and October because my father, Phil Murphy, died. Learned then that all of his family and my mother's family went to St James School in Chestnut Grove. They were all born in the 1930s. Names:

Did Danny Mckevitt have a brother called Francis?

My family all went to St James's too, my dad was James Leslie Harrison born 39. If anyone knows him or has any photos or stories I would be interested in hearing them. Always good to know what your parent's school days were like.

I can remember father Kennedy and Father O`Sullivan, those dogs were `Boxers` they sometimes used to get loose in `Chestnut Grove`the fattest ugliest one (Dog that is) was called `Bobby`(forget the other ones name),(their gob`s always looked as if they had been chasing parked-cars, can remember we could `have a good laugh with the priests though, when it snowed in winter they`d pelt us with snowballs from the churchyard,over the railings of our playground , almost opposite,and we would return the favour, with interest. The ugliest dogs were probably nuns. I was at Sy. James from when I was 5 years old. The nuns were bitches of the first order. The priests were bar-stuards. Sister Helena was one I remember in particular. She was a cow. Funnily enough, I loved school I just hated the clergy.

tom O'Conner's dad was boss on the docks took the plate round st James on Sundays he looked like a Irish farmers red faced and wore a trilby but I agree with H don't recall young tom teaching there unless it was a temp relieve

Have met Tom a few times, he’s a regular on P&O Cruises. He told me he taught at St James. Ken

why put photos on this web and delete them if I can do it I would leave them on the web : roll: what are they gonna do with these old photos throw them back in the sideboard for another hundred years or end up on the skip or give them back to Crosby the Bootle photos were donated to Crosby library by TOM he lived by the Bootle labour club went to his house and he gave me a lot of photo copy's and a cup of tea I was there for hours TOM shared his work for the people of BOOTLE respect him and don't delete them other wise come off this web and go play on FACEBOOK we don't want you on our web if you don't want to share and delete photos this is what this web is all about memory's of BOOTLE past and present

Hi Tommy,

People are not actually deleting their photos. Our forum system uses FREE image hosting which our members use and nothing is stored on our web server here.

If the FREE hosting service closes down and discontinues the hosting then unfortunately the photos will disappear.

In the case of Photobucket they began charging an extortionate amount of money to continue using their services and allow embedding photos elsewhere so everyone just left and started using other FREE hosting services.

I have just discovered this site and joined up. My name is John Quinn. I was born in 1942. and lived on Holywell Street until we moved to Netherton (Ronald Ross Ave) when I was about 12 or 13. I went to St. James Primary and Junior 1947-1953 and after the II + went to St. Francis Xavier's College, Salisbury Street, Liverpool 1953 - 1960. Every other boy who passed the II+ at St. James that year went to St. Mary's in Crosby.My paternal grandmother had a "sweet shop" on Marsh Lane next to Tommy Houghton's coal yard and opposite St. James secondary school. .While he was still alive my grandad was a bookie out of that shop.

I have seen a number of posts about Tom O'Connor. Tom's dad and my maternal grandfather, Samuel Smyth, were friends and dockers together. I went to Simmaries to become a teacher in 1960 because of Tom O'Connor. I didn't even officially apply. Tom took me to London with him, introduced me to Fr. Kevin Cronin, the Principal, and everything was arranged that way. I started at Simmaries in September 1960. I was in the first group that had a 3 year programme. Tom was in Year 2, and his was the last year of the 2 year programme. Tom lead the Country Dance band for the Sunday night dances, which at that time were perhaps the most popular dance on campus. It was an incredible cardio-vascular workout. I played football at Simmaries for the 1st XI and many considered that one year team (1960 - 61) to be the best football team the college ever had. The best person I ever played football with was Tony Knox who was a 3rd Year Phys. Ed. specialist (this was the only group doing 3 years at that time and wore a blazer badge different from the normal college badge.) Tony captained England Amateurs after he left college. The only other scouser on that team was Sammy Adair who had gone to St. Mary's Crosby, or St. Edwards, I think.

After that year at Simms I studied for the priesthood with the Missionaries of Africa.(White Fathers). That took me to Blacklion, Ireland, Dorking in Surrey and Eastview (now Vanier) in Ontario, Canada. later completed my teacher training at Simms, taught for 1 year at St. Swithins Secondary Modern in Croxteth and 2 years at Salesian College Battersea. Then I made the best decision of my life. I married and I married up. My wife of 48 years and still going strong is Nora (O'Malley) of Crosby, Seafield and Liverpool University. We moved to Jamaica where we both taught high school, Cornwall College(boys) and Mount Alvernia(girls) in Montego Bay. I also ran a Scuba Diving business (Montego Reef Divers), taught swimming and Scuba Diving (Jamaica School of Swimming, Skin and Scuba Diving) and worked 3 months on the movie Papillon with Dustin Hoffman and Steve McQueen.

We moved to Ontario, Canada in 1974 and other than 18 months doing graduate studies in Boston, Mass. have lived there since 1974. We currently live in St. Catharines, just down the road from Niagara Falls. We have four kids, three boys, one girl...three teachers, one film screen writer, producer. We also have two grandchildren and perhaps more to come as my oldest is getting married his Fall.

I don't know if there are any other old farts from my time still around and on this site. I also have some photos of Holywell Street (1945 - 1956), St. James class photos, and a photo of a cubs football team that included many St. James boys. If anyone knows if photos can be posted and more significantly how a Luddite (with the assistance of his tech-competent kids and grandkids)
goes about doing it.

I am definitely Abie's older brother. I have't heard him called that for years. Albert died a number of years back riding his motorbike in Thailand.

I see Brenda and his three girls and their families when we are back in Liverpool. I come back about every five years for a college class reunion in London. I will see them all this October when they are coming over here for our eldest son's wedding.

"st james had the beautiful statue of our lady in the grounds and we used to walk around it in the may procession singing oh mary we crown thee with blossoms today"...you were obviously a much more "religious" or "obedient" group that when I was at St. James. My name is John Quinn and I currently live in Ontario, Canada with my wife of 48 years, Nora(O'Malley).I was at St. James from 1947 to 1953 and after the 11+ I went to St. Francis Xavier's College in Salisbury St, Liverpool. I most certainly remember the May procession and also remember singing 'O Mary we crown thee with jam jars today", and similar, what we thought funny, words in many of the hymns. My grandmother had a "sweet shop" on Marsh Lane, next to Tommy Houghton's coal-yard and opposite St. James Secondary and I went there for lunch every day.

Dan, I found it a coincidence that the pictures of the two churches you have posted, are the two Catholic Churches that mean most to me. Although C of E growing up and attending St Mary's, I used also to go to Mass at St James with my friends. When I met Phil, my husband, he lived off Salisbury street, and SFX was his parish church. A number of years ago there were plans to demolish this beautiful building, a committee was formed and a fight to save the church was thankfully successful. I am a member of that "Friends" committee. A lot of money has been raised through grants etc, although not as much as is needed. It's well worth a visit. It's interior is like something you'd see in Italy, with beautiful marbles and stained glass. Visitors are invited to take photographs, and walk around uninterrupted, everyone is made welcome. The Jimmy McGovan drama, " Broken" was also filmed there. So Dan thanks for linking my past with my present.

My dad James Gill - went to St James. He had a teacher called Mr.Wolfarth who said was great and was good to the kids, academic or sporty. Mr. Wolfarth played cricket with the lads etc at lunch time. When I went to school in the 70s, I went to St Thomas Aquinas. Mr Wolfarth was there, then nearing the end of his career. I told him about me dad playing cricket at St James - he said ‘yes, he bowled me out with a googly!’
